If you’re a tenant having a tough time paying your rent, we can help. Life is full of unexpected twists, and at times, meeting financial obligations, such as paying rent, can become a real challenge. If you find yourself navigating the storm of financial uncertainty, know that you’re not alone. We know it’s not easy, but let’s chat about your options and share some helpful resources:

Where do I stand if I can’t pay my rent?

Not being able to pay rent is a tricky situation, but it’s nothing to be embarrassed about. Don’t hesitate to have a heart-to-heart with your landlord or even your letting agent! Trust us; communication is key! Despite the stereotypes, not all landlords are money-grabbers. Many are genuinely willing to help and if we represent your landlord, please know that you can always reach out to us for support, too!

Can I just stop paying my rent if I can’t afford it?

No! Your tenancy agreement is a legally-binding contract, so stopping payments without talking to your landlord first is a no-go. Make sure you understand the terms of your tenancy agreement because this can provide clarity on your options and potential support. Remember, it’s a two-way street–landlords also have obligations to their tenants and knowing the rights of both the tenant and the landlord can empower you during discussions.

I’m already in arrears, what should I do?

First of all, don’t panic. Call your landlord or letting agency ASAP to figure out a plan to repay what you owe. Don’t delay the chat. Come prepared with a rough idea of the plan you’d like to implement and treat the conversation seriously. Explain why you’re struggling and what you can do to make things right. At Stockport Homes Group, we have a Money Advice team who are dab hands at devising rent payment plans. We can put you in touch with the team to work out the best solution for you.
